How UPI Settle-Up Works in SplitMitra

The Short Version

SplitMitra keeps the record; your UPI app moves the money. When a plan or group settles up, SplitMitra works out who should pay whom, opens your UPI app with the details filled in, and records the payment once the person receiving it confirms. At no point does money pass through SplitMitra.

Settlement is free on every tier.

Step 1: Balances Are Netted

Every expense changes balances. If Asha paid for dinner and Ravi paid for the cab, each of them is owed something by the others. Settling each expense separately would mean dozens of tiny payments.

Instead, SplitMitra adds everything up into one balance per person: how much they paid in total minus their share of everything. With debt simplification on, which is the default for every plan and group, those balances are then netted across the group. The result is the smallest set of transfers that brings everyone to zero.

The plan owner can switch simplification off. Then each person settles directly with the people they actually shared costs with, which can mean more payments but follows the original expenses more closely.

Step 2: Paying Over UPI

Each transfer appears as a card with the payer, the receiver and the amount.

  • If you’re paying, choose your UPI app from the card. It opens with the receiver’s UPI ID, their name and the exact amount already filled in. You confirm the payment in your UPI app as you normally would.
  • If you’re receiving, you can show a UPI QR code for the exact amount, so the payer can scan it from any UPI app.

For this to work, the receiver needs a UPI ID saved on their profile. If they haven’t added one, the card says so instead of showing a payment button, and you can still settle any other way you like and record it.

We describe this as UPI-ready settlement: SplitMitra prepares the payment, but you complete it in your own UPI app. It isn’t an automatic transfer, and SplitMitra never sees your bank or UPI credentials.

Step 3: Marking Paid and Confirming

After paying, the payer marks the transfer as paid. The receiver then sees it waiting for confirmation and either confirms that the money arrived or rejects it if it didn’t.

Only a confirmed payment clears the debt. This two-sided check keeps the record honest: nobody can clear their own balance just by saying they paid.

Each confirmed payment is kept in the plan’s payment history, and the balances update for everyone straight away.

05

Closing Out a Plan

When every transfer is confirmed, the group is square. For a plan with an end date, such as a trip or an event, the owner can then mark it completed. Groups have no end date, so they stay open and you settle again whenever the balance builds up.

Common Questions

  • Does it matter which UPI app we use? No. Any UPI app works, on either side.
  • What if someone paid in cash? Record it the same way: the payer marks it paid and the receiver confirms.
  • What if the receiver rejects a payment? The debt stays open. Check with them, pay again if it didn’t go through, and mark it paid once more.
